Our Team

John J. Forken



In 1981 John J. Forken turned from teaching high school students about business and economics to applying his knowledge to help adults achieve their financial goals. To his masters degree he added financial planning training through a 2.5 year program sponsored by CIGNA Financial Services Corporation. John and his wife Chris established The Independent Group of Companies SM in 1987.

Today, John is a Registered Representative of FSC Securities Corporation and Licensed Insurance Agent.

John spends a great deal of time promoting his profession and his community. He is past president of the Upstate New York Chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning, and was a member of the Webster Team for Economic Development.

Nathaniel O’Dell


I was born and raised in Webster, NY.  During this time, I witnessed the transformative power of financial freedom in the lives of those around me. My passion for personal finance, investing, and for helping people grew through my years at Webster Christian School. This created a natural transition to becoming a business major at Roberts Wesleyan College where I received my bachelor’s degree in Business.

l took my lifelong interest in personal finance and joined the Independent Group of Companies as a registered representative. Joining a group with over 30 years of experience in the field of finance.  I focus on assisting clients in reaching their financial goals; for themselves, their families, and their businesses. I currently hold my series 7, series 66, and NYS life accident and health insurance licenses.

With my passion and knowledge of personal finance, along with my love of people, I aim to assist clients in reaching their goals; including financial freedom. My mission statement is as follows, “To inspire, educate, and empower investors and businesses on a conscious path to financial freedom – purposely pursuing successful financial outcomes for themselves so that they can enjoy life to the fullest”.
